Der Weiss Kunig. Eine Erzehlung von den Thaten Kaiser Maximilian des Ersten. Vienna, Joseph Kurzböckens, 1775. In-folio, bradel blue paperboard bradel (period binding). Fairfax-Murray, German books, No. 416. Original edition of one of the most beautiful German plate books of the 18th century. The work, which relates the actions of Emperor Maximilian I (1459-1519), was written under the sovereign's own dictation by his secretary, Marx Treitzaurwein, but was not completed during his reign. It was only published two centuries later, based on manuscripts and woods found in the library in Vienna. Beautiful illustration comprising 237 woodcut plates based on drawings by Hans Burgkmair, Hans Schäufelein, Leonhard Beck and Hans Springinklee; all of them are in first edition, except for the last engraving, which was reengraved in the 18th century. The woods, carved at the beginning of the 16th century, had never been used: 6 of them represent hunting and fishing scenes, the others show mostly battle scenes. Heavy freckles. Very used binding.
