Romano Romanelli (1882-1969)

As the renovation of the Bibliothèque nationale (BnF) in Paris meets with widespread acclaim, the reappearance of a key component in the decor of Cardinal Mazarin’s bedroom by Romanelli comes as a pleasant surprise.

Archaeologists unearthed the graves of over 50 adults and children whose attire and resting places indicated high stature. The Roman cemetery was discovered during the building of an infant school in Somerton, Somerset, and suggested that its inhabitants were Brits adopting Roman customs following their invasion.

The future institution, which will open in Saint-Cloud in 2026, is adding to its collection an Allegory of Justice, an octagonal canvas by Giovanni Francesco Romanelli (1610-1662), recently rediscovered. Created for the bedroom of Cardinal Mazarin, the painting sold for €254,000 today at Drouot.

The Sainte-Marie-Majeure cathedral, one of the emblematic monuments of the Phocaean city in the Romano-Byzantine style, is the subject of a restoration project that began in March 2022. This two-year project will restore the watertightness of the 19th century building by repairing its lead roof.
