The museum’s acquisition of a 1929 work by cubist artist María Blanchard has sparked anger and confusion within the Spanish art world, with some claiming the €70,000 purchase exceeds the Prado’s purview, stepping on the toes of the city’s Museo Reina Sofía, which specializes in 20th-century artworks. Spain will buy the Archivo Lafuente, the 20,000-piece collection of avant-garde objects and artworks amassed by José María Lafuente, a who made his fortune selling mozzarella and other cheeses to a chain of Spanish grocery stores, since the 1990s. In Lafuente stated: “It is a private archive with a public vocation,”

Spanish artist Maria Blanchard was one of the few Cubist women painters. Two works typical of her output, featuring young girls, are up for auction in Normandy.

Previously postponed due to Covid-19, the Berlin Biennale will take place from September 5 to November 1. The eleventh edition of the Biennale will be curated by a group of South American curators including María Berríos, Renata Cervetto, Lisette Lagnado, and Agustín Pérez Rubio.

Themed on sustainable relations, it will be hosted at ExRotaprint, daadgalerie, Gropius Bau, and KW Institute for Contemporary Art, all of which will open from June 13 – September 13.
