Works on paper by women artists led the recent New York sale. The 1989 color Mixografía Hermes by Helen Frankenthaler sold for a record $47,000 for the print. Records continued with Dorothea Rockburne’s 1972 portfolio, Locus selling for $42,500, and Lee Krasner’s 1969 color lithograph, Special Blue, at $17,500.

Since it began hosting the likes of Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner and Willem de Kooning during the mid-20th century, Long Island has become home to a thriving art scene. Now, Zwirner and his wife Monica are seeking to establish an artist residency program in Montauk by subsidizing rent for 17 cottages. (artnews)

Although perhaps best known for her textbook American Art Since 1900, Rose’s work was diverse and far-reaching. An art critic for Vogue and New York Magazine, she produced eight documentary films, taught at various universities and curated numerous exhibitions, including the first Lee Krasner retrospective.

Female artists across the ages are being given their due in a new exhibition of over 200 works by Cindy Sherman, Lee Krasner, Georgia O’Keefe and more. “All of the art here is political,” says curator Nonie Gadsden. The works are on show until November 28. (Guardian)

The South Korean artist has just opened his new art center, the “Lee Ufan Arles”, in the city of Arles in Provence. He maintains close ties with France and his Western public, which reciprocates his affection.

With recipients representing seventeen states, Puerto Rico, and fourteen countries, the grants seek to provide artists and organizations with professional support. They can cover the costs of materials, studio rent, mounting exhibitions and attending residencies, as well as offsetting living expenses. (Artforum)

The new contemporary art space, created by Ufan’s foundation, takes up 3 floors of the Hôtel Vernon, which he discovered in 2016. Japanese architect and long-time friend of Ufan, Tadao Ando led the work on the building. The center spotlights both Ando and Ufan, while featuring works by Ufan and other artists (Le Monde)

The equestrian statue of Confederate general Robert E. Lee, once the focal point of the deadly white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, will be melted down and transformed into a new piece of public art by a local Black-led institution. The statue was already removed in July 2021.

The Mayfair-based gallery now represents the French painter, a major figure of lyrical abstraction who died in 1999. It will dedicate a first exhibition to him in London in June 2023.
