Jackson Pollock (1912-1956)

Pollock's "Red Composition" dating to 1946 will be auctioned on October 6, in order to acquire works by minority artists. At the same time, the Royal Opera House in London is parting ways with a David Hockney to overcome the difficulties linked to the pandemic, hoping to raise between £11M and £18M.

Yesterday, the Syracuse-based museum announced the acquisition of seven new works by contemporary artists, including Shinique Smith, using funds raised by the controversial deaccessioning of a 1949 Jackson Pollock. The museum decided to sell the $12 M painting in order to obtain more work by women and artists of color.

Published on Monday in Nature Communications, the study cites Jackson Pollock’s four-year period of intense productivity. It proposes that a sequence of exploration, followed by a period of focus on fewer subjects and styles, could instigate a ‘hot-streak’.

Zwirner’s plan to establish an artists’ retreat in Montauk, Long Island – a destination for famous artists such as Willem de Kooning and Jackson Pollock - has met resistance from locals. They argue that Zwirner’s proposal to build 17 cottages would obstruct their access to the lake.

Initially launched in response to the pandemic in 2020, the online art course has since become so popular that the League has launched a new online platform e-telier. In the past, the League has taught the likes of Jackson Pollock, Georgia O’Keefe and Yayoi Kusama.

The Washington gallery has acquired Faith Ringgold’s “The Flag is Bleeding”, an iconic piece examining American identity and history. Senior curator Harry Cooper says it may be “the most important purchase” the National Gallery has made since Jackson Pollock’s “No.1, 1950 (Lavender Mist)” in 1976.

Mollison built the NGA’s collection before it opened in 1982, coordinating significant acquisitions including that of Jackson Pollock’s Blue Poles. His commitment to celebrating Australian art influenced the collections of the NGA and the National Gallery of Victoria which he led for six years. He died on January 19.

Since it began hosting the likes of Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner and Willem de Kooning during the mid-20th century, Long Island has become home to a thriving art scene. Now, Zwirner and his wife Monica are seeking to establish an artist residency program in Montauk by subsidizing rent for 17 cottages. (artnews)

Considered one of his generation’s most outstanding artists, Sam Szafran died on 14 September. A large 1958 painting in Saint-Valery-en-Caux, Normandy, revealed the earliest years of his rich career.

The star, who turns 55 on May 16th, is celebrating her birthday by auctioning over 1,000 pieces from her four-decade-long career. Jewelry, a wedding dress and tour outfits are among memorabilia on show in London, New York and Los Angeles, before being sold by Julien’s Auction in Beverly Hills. (Guardian)
