The Washington gallery has acquired Faith Ringgold’s “The Flag is Bleeding”, an iconic piece examining American identity and history. Senior curator Harry Cooper says it may be “the most important purchase” the National Gallery has made since Jackson Pollock’s “No.1, 1950 (Lavender Mist)” in 1976.
