Étienne Dumonstier (1504-1603)

It's a new acquisition for the museum, following its preemption at public auction. A drawing "of great rarity", depicting the Adoration of the Child, by the 16th-century painter and illuminator from Rouen, whose corpus does not exceed 20 drawings. In this work, he used an indigo wash for the only time in his career.

These freshly restored Renaissance masterpieces are on display in their entirety at the Château d'Écouen. A first for over four centuries, though experts must still weave their way through a few thorny areas.
