André Marfaing (1925-1987)

After a surge of interest from institutions in the past five years, the market is reassessing the unjustly forgotten French postwar painter.

While the Pont-Aven school will once again top the bill in Brest, the sale will also have variety, with modern works by Chu Teh-Chun and André Marfaing.

The gallery recently opened its first American branch in Marfa, Texas. This is Max Hetzler's fourth space, in addition to those in Berlin, Paris and London. The inaugural exhibition features works by Albert Oehlen; a permanent installation by Darren Almond, Inflection Point, will be situated at the entrance.

Ambroise Vollard acquired this 1905 work, which has not been seen since it entered the Fischof-La Foux Collection. Its rediscovery is an event to follow.

Michael Phelan, who founded the insider arts fair Marfa Invitational two years ago, is now set to open up a permanent arts foundation in the city, rebranded as simply ‘The Invitational’. Open all-year-long, it will occupy a new 15,000 square-foot space and host an array of cross-disciplinary arts events. (NY Times)
