Louis d'or from the Plovezet Treasure

23 gold coins minted under Louis XIII and 216 under Louis XIV make up a treasure trove discovered in Plovezet, in the Bigouden area. The most striking of the group is this rare double louis d'or "à la mèche longue".

Louis XIV is shown at the age of 8 on this double Louis "à la mèche longue" ("with a long lock of hair"). Minted in Dijon, the coin belongs to a corpus of only 120 extant examples, listed in the reference book…
