Philosophe lisant (Philsopher Reading) was sold to a French collector at Epernay by the Enchères Champagne auction house. The work by Jean-Honoré Fragonard had belonged to the miniaturist Pierre Adolphe Hall and was thought lost before the auctioneer Antoine Petit found it during an inventory of an estate in the Marne.
