Two amphibians make the headlines

Jean Carriès (1855-1894), «Grenouille aux oreilles de lapin», c. 1891, stoneware, 17 x 20 cm.
Result: 127,490

On 22 October at the Ducal Palace in Nevers, two amphibians made the headlines: the product of the inimitable Jean Carriès’ fertile imagination. These two rare stoneware sculptures with bronze highlights each obtained the world’s highest recorded auction price for this artist (source: Artnet). The smaller of these two extraordinary frogs fetched €85,400, while its companion, a frog with rabbit’s ears, obtained €127,490 – probably because of its hybrid aspect. They will be staying together, as the same bidder bought both of them for the impressive total of €212,890.
