Buddhist Serenity and European Silver

On 13 September 2021, by Philippe Dufour

On Saturday, July 24, a sale at Orne Enchères auction house in Alençon featured a serene-looking, gold-lacquered ancient Buddha posed in meditation. Made in China or Vietnam, the statue (25 x 17 x 12 cm/9.8 x 6.7 x 4.7 in) fetched €5,180. Another lot stood out for its originality: a set of six silver hunting cups sculpted in the round in the form of wolves heads, with bodies engraved with hunting scenes and interiors in vermeil, sold for €3,130. The goblets, of 19th-century German or English craftsmanship, bear British import marks (total weight: 1,100 g/2.43 lbs).
