The moon, from both the scientific and artistic point of view, is in the limelight at the Grand-Palais in Paris for the fiftieth anniversary of man's first steps on its soil. At Drouot, on Friday 26 April, this gouache by Kim Whan-ki with its poetic subject of a stag, a mountain and the moon, fetched €84,320, garnering the Korean (seen rarely in the Western market but frequently in those of Asia) a French record for a work on paper. At the same sale, the drawings of artists who came from the Far East to explore Western modernity soared the highest. Zao Wou-ki – a well-known and far more familiar figure – was represented here by an "Untitled" watercolour of 1976, rewarded by €114,080.
