Our Lady and Saint John Pair of polychromed wooden sculptures. Castilian School. Transition between Romanesque and Gothic. Circa 1300. Magnificent pair of sculptures, originally from a Calvary scene. Mary is in a frontal position, crossing her arms in front of her chest. Her sweet face has a look of serene sadness. She is wearing a red tunic decorated with small flowers and a large cloak covers her body, from head to toes. Residue of gothic characters can be seen on the plinth. Saint John, grieving, rests his head in his right hand in his most characteristic gesture when depicted in a Calvary scene attending the death of his Master. In the other hand he holds a book of the Holy Scriptures. He wears a blue tunic and a red cloak which falls from his shoulders to his feet. Height: 64 cm. each.
