Saint John of Nepomuk Carved, stewed and polychromed sculpture. Guatemala. Colonial School. 17th century.
The marvellous stewing work on this sculpture is outstanding, which, as well as the sculptural work, gives the statue great movement and richness of colour. Magnificent polychroming of the skin tones. The saint is depicted according to custom, dressed as a canon, in other words with a cassock and an ermine surplice (symbol of purity). His right foot rests on a bridge, as a reminder of his death by drowning and his being the patron of engineers.
