21 large illustrated broadsides and pamphlets on the Arminian controversy in Holland 1618-1623, with some later additions. Mostly mounted. In good condition (toned, 1 corner def.). The Arminian controversy was one of the most important debates that raged throughout the Dutch Republic during the 17th c. What started out as an academic debate about predestination got entangled in a number of other hotly contested issues – the locus of sovereignty, the course of foreign policy, the extent of religious toleration, the relationship between church and magistrate –, creating a potent mixture of violent passions that would bring the country to the brink of civil war. The present collection consists of a number of illustrated broadsides remembering scenes that shocked the country, often with Dutch or French explanatory verses. It includes portraits of P. Bertius, G. van Ledenberch, H.D. Slatius, as well as allegorical scenes of justice or treason. Among the later plates a coloured engraving of the "Iustitie van Carel den Stouten" by J. Bormeester. Ref. Muller (Historieplaten 1400, 1421, 1449, 1481, 1495c, 1499b, 1498, 1501, 1502, 3848 etc.). - Knuttel 2908.
