À 47 ans, il est le plus jeune peintre à avoir l'honneur d'une rétrospective au Musée national d'art moderne. En avril 1967, dans son atelier, Pierre Soulages travaille sur une toile qu'il n'a pas installée sur un chevalet mais posée à plat sur le sol. Très large (35 cm), le pinceau qu'il utilise a été fabriqué spécialement pour lui.
