CHARDIN (Jean) Amsterdam, Aux dépens de la Compagnie,...

Estimate :
1 500 - 2 000 EUR

CHARDIN (Jean) Amsterdam, Aux dépens de la Compagnie, 1735. Voyages en Perse, et autres lieux de l'Orient. 4 vol. in-4 (25.9 × 20.2 cm), blond calf, three gilded fillets framing the covers, ribbed spine decorated with gilded motifs, brown ochre title and appendix, gilded edges (period binding). The most complete edition, and therefore the most sought-after. Frontispiece (repeated once), 80 out-of-text figures (mostly double-page or folded, on 88 leaves) of maps, plans, views, monuments, archaeology, types, etc., all engraved on copper. This is the first complete, posthumous, enlarged edition of the Coronation of Soliman III, which makes it particularly interesting. This relation," says Boucher de la Richarderie, "was not included in the editions of Chardin's voyages in 1711 and 1723. It can only be found in the last edition of his Voyages, given after his death in 1735 - very rare" (Schwab). Our copy contains 46 plates in the second volume, instead of 45, and also includes a frontispiece in the third volume, as do some copies. Joints cracked, headpieces missing or worn, one headpiece turned inside out. Some foxing. Provenance Sir Joseph Copley (label). Bibliography Brunet, I, 1802. Chadenat, n°1566. Schwab, Bibliographie de la Perse, n°87-88. Atabey, no. 220.
