Voyage dans les parties sud de l' Amérique septentrionale. 2 vol. in-8 (19.7 × 12 cm), shagreened calf, gilt roulette in frame, smooth spine decorated, red title-pieces (period binding). First French edition of this travel report focusing on botany and the study of wild nations. Bartram, an American botanist, is considered one of the first "naturalists" to describe nature with emotion. His work had a definite influence on the American transcendentalist writers Emerson and Thoreau. The original appeared in Philadelphia in 1791. It is illustrated with a frontispiece depicting Mico Chlucco, chief of the Siminole Indians, a map and 3 fold-out plates. Restoration to binding. ATTACHMENTS - ANBUREY (Thomas)]. Paris, La Villette, 1793. 2 vol. in-8 (19 × 12 cm), fawn half-basin with small vellum corners, ornate smooth spines, brown titles and green endpapers (contemporary binding). Second French translation, by F.-J.-M. Noël (after Le Bas). The original appeared in London in 1789. It is illustrated with 2 frontispieces, a fold-out map and a plan. Some spotting and staining; map wet; volume II, cahier D, margins of some leaves cut. - CARVER (Jonathan). Voyage dans les parties intérieures de l'Amérique septentrionale pendant les années 1766, 1767 & 1768. Paris, Pissot, 1784. In-8 (19.8 × 12.5 cm), fawn half-calf with corners, ornate ribbed spine, numeral V. D. (?) crowned on the spine, red title page, marbled edges (period binding). First French edition, based on the third English edition of 1781. It is illustrated with a folding map of the Great Lakes region and part of the Midwest (with the Mississippi and the names of the Indian tribes). Chapter XVII deals with Indian languages and writing.
