Muse of the Roaring Twenties, lesbian icon, singer and cabaret owner, Suzy Solidor was a model for Raoul Dufy, Maurice de Vlaminck, Francis Picabia, Man Ray, Kees van Dongen, Foujita and many others.
Although we know of a portrait painted for Jean Mermoz in the 1930s (Coutau-Bégarie sale, March 25, 2017, lot 231), it seems that Paul Colin had other commissions. In the case of this work, it was Louis Godfrin, a Nancy pharmacist, scholar and supporter of the city's Art Deco movement.
