An uniquely double-gourd-shaped lacquer suzuri'bako 硯箱 (writing box) with a design of gourd leaves, by Hara Yôyûsai 原羊遊斎 (1769-1845).
Covered with amber colored lacquer and decorated in gold, orange and brown takamaki-e 高蒔絵 with gourd leaves and a waning gibbous moon in takazôgan 高象嵌.
The interior and inside of the cover are decorated in gold and silver takamaki-e and hirame 平目 with 'maiden-flowers' 女郎花 (ominaeshi). The inside of the lid signed Yôyûsai 羊遊斎.
The interior of the box is fitted with a rectangular bronze water dropper 水滴 (suiteki) cast with a flying crane in relief, a nicely-shaped inkstone 硯 (suzuri), and brush rests.
Height: 4.5 cm.
Length: 24 cm.
Width 22 cm.
In a good condition with wear and extensive crackling to the lacquer, with small associated losses.
CATALOGUE NOTE
Hara Yōyūsai, a renowned Edo artist, was the official lacquerer for the Doi clan of the Koga domain. He produced lacquers in the Rinpa style, which originated from Hon'ami Kōetsu and was further developed by Ogata Kōrin.
