LE CORBUSIER Édouard Jeanneret, dit (1887 - 1965) L.A.S. "Jeanneret," [Paris January 2, 1919], to Albert ADÈS; 4 pages in-8, envelope. He sent him Après le cubisme, written in collaboration with OZENFANT. "The ideas expressed in it are the result of many experiences in life, and we have obliged ourselves to write them clearly, perhaps even with a certain dryness and deliberate lack of lyricism that will offend you. However, there are undeniable things that need to be said to crystallize around the splendid torch of our times, so many devoted wills that desire serious work but feel too isolated. I know you're very fiery; deep down, I'm sometimes vehement and, underneath an apparent calm, violent. But I don't accept that art should be unbridled, when in all human activity, discipline and rigor are indispensable, factors of beauty, order and harmony. So why put it into painting? There must at least be a guideline. Perhaps you don't agree at all. We'd be delighted if a strong, orderly artist like you were to judge our work, even if it means opposing our ideas outright. I think controversy on this subject is useful, and I'd be delighted to see you develop these ideas in the Grande Revue or elsewhere"...
