The Women's Souk in Tunis Oil on panel 22 x 27 cm Signed lower left G Le Mare On the back is handwritten Souk El Kachachine (Women) Tunis November 1932 G Lemar. Georges Le Mare's Souk des Femmes can be compared with Alexandre Roubtzoff's painting Souk el Kachachine, which depicts an alleyway in the famous Tunis bazaar specializing in fabrics, the particularity of which is that it is reserved exclusively for women, who sit on the floor all along the stores, waiting for dealers to come and make offers by waving their merchandise in front of them. Le Mare and Roubtzoff were able to paint this assembly of women surrounded by a hodgepodge of colorful motifs, illustrating numerous genre scenes drawn from everyday life, making these great painters exceptional witnesses to the local customs of the Tunis medina.
