Edouard-Marcel Sandoz (Swiss, 1881-1971) possible unique edition by Christofle for the artist Cup with three greyhounds, c. 1927 with silver-plated bronze base supporting a chrome-plated metal bowl. Signed on the foot. The model created in 1927. Height: 14 cm. Diam. 19.5 cm. (scratches on the bowl) Bibliography: Félix Marcilhac, "Sandoz, sculpteur figuriste et animalier, 1881-1971, Catalogue raisonné de l'oeuvre sculptée", Editions de l'amateur, Paris, 1996, n°MAM6/1927-5, p. 342-343. Provenance: Vendôme collection. Edouard-Marcel Sandoz, ca.1927. A footed bowl decorated with three greyhounds. Silver-plated bronze base and chrome plated bowl. Presumably a one-of-a-kind creation by Christofle. We would like to thank Madame Caroline Radenac, Head of Christofle's Heritage Department, who informed us that the piece does indeed appear on a glass plate in the archives (Pll 9903, Conservatoire Bouilhet Christofle), but without any further contextual information. The piece has no Christofle hallmark, and could therefore be a one-off made for the artist. The refined treatment of the profiles of the three Greyhounds is a fervent testimony to Marcel Sandoz's talent for animal sculpture. To create his works in bronze, stone and porcelain, Sandoz drew inspiration from living animals, in the tradition of Antoine-Louis Barye and Rembrandt Bugatti. In 1933, he founded the Société Française des Animaliers, dedicated to exhibiting and promoting artists of this genre. With this bowl, Marcel Sandoz combines the sculptural with the utilitarian, between bronze art and goldsmithing. In choosing the Greyhound motif, with its racy allure and haughty bearing, the sculptor pays homage to the dog of the Pharaohs and Greco-Roman gods.
