SAND (George).
LAS, to her friend and confidant André Boutet, Nohant, July 28, 1867. 6 pages in-8, with env.
"My dear old man, I find you frightfully bad-mouthed, and I don't want to know why Hortense isn't here to receive my money. Who's to say she's not on a pilgrimage? And that the doctor isn't in Nohant? Ah? You'd be in for your dreadful gossip! She then describes the arrangement with her former husband Casimir Dudevant and their children: "At last my children are out of it, out of their dignity. They had a treaty signed that maintains their rights as conferred by the first judgment. They save for the future all that remains of the fortune, about a third, and they assure their father the usufruct of this debris, in return for which he will not fall into misery unless he is starved to death to wrest his income from him. He's as unhappy as he is guilty, but there's no escaping his fate."
