[L'ANNÉE LITTÉRAIRE" MAGAZINE].
Important corpus of 712 handwritten articles and notes,
published in "Lettres sur quelques écrits de ce temps" (1749-1754) and mostly in "L'Année Littéraire" (c. 1749-1790).
A precious collection offering exceptional insight into half a century of literary and artistic life. These are essentially unabridged clean copies of the articles, and a few quick index cards
in sheets or sewn into notebooks, in-12 format.
Launched in 1754, L'Année littéraire is considered one of the major periodicals of the 18th century. Elie Fréron (1718-1776) founded and directed it until his death, and
and established himself as the leading pen of the anti-philosophical party.
Numerous autographed articles by Fréron, covering roughly the period 1767-1776; and much attention is paid to the work of his successors up to 1790, with a particular focus on the great successes of the 1780s, such as Les Liaisons dangereuses (1782) and Mémoires de Saint-Simon (1788).
Preparatory notes and copies of articles are also included.
This corpus resembles a file compiled by collaborators, from which to draw. Note a commentary on Montesquieu's Esprit des Lois and a review of Mme de Graffigny's Lettres d'une Péruvienne by Abbé Joseph de la Porte; a few notes for the review of Fontanelle, Ericie ou la Vestale... (See Jean Balcou, Le Dossier Fréron, Genève, Droz, 1975).
Minor loss, some dampstaining and foxing in the margins of a few issues.
