[PATERIUS]. Liber testimoniorum Veteris Testamenti [Liber Numeri (fragment)]; [Liber Deuteronomi (fragment)]. Southern France (?), second half of 12th century (?) Fragment, notebook of 8 ff., unbound; late caroline minuscule script in brown ink, 30 lines per page; drypoint ruled (justification: 142 x 98 mm); headings in capital letters; monochrome red initials, some ornate; some letters highlighted in red. Dimensions: 222 x 140 mm Rare extract from a (Cistercian?) manuscript. Note the very spare, monochrome decoration, as is often the case with Cistercian manuscripts. The general aesthetic is reminiscent of Cistercian manuscripts, and we know the importance of Gregory the Great and his Moralia in Job in Cistercian circles. Paterius or Patère of Brescia was a 6th-century monk and disciple of Gregory the Great (he was his secretary, notarius; then secundicerius). Patère was bishop of Brescia and sanctified (feast day: February 21). He wrote an important work that enjoyed great manuscript success. His Liber testimoniorum veteris testamenti draws on the writings of Gregory the Great to provide a sustained commentary on the Scriptures. This work had a great influence and diffusion in the Middle Ages, and remains important for our knowledge of the diffusion of Gregory the Great's work: certain excerpts quoted by Paterius are not found in the known works of Saint Gregory. This notebook contains part of Paterius' Liber testimoniorum Veteris Testamenti for the books of Numbers and Deuteronomy.
