XXth LITERATURE. - 2 LAS and one ms. - PONGE - EMMANUEL - GUITTON. - EMMANUEL (Pierre). LAS to the director of Le Figaro Littéraire, Maurice Noël. June 11 (1948). 3 pp. in-8, with env. Interesting letter in which, following Entretiens published by Reverdy, the poet Emmanuel makes an important clarification: "I don't see where, or how, I could have said, or written, that 'Supervielle delivered me from Rimbaud'. Without wishing to hurt Reverdy's feelings, whom I consider to be one of the few poets essential to our time, I feel that his assertion is a double absurdity. (...) But I don't think my rectification needs to be made public on a literary forum where agiotage and mutual malice are the rule". The letter was nevertheless published in the "Figaro Littéraire" of June 19, 1948. With the poet's agreement, as evidenced by a fragment of letter signed by Pierre Emmanuel, enclosed: "Since you insist on publishing my letter, I want this passage to appear in extenso, because the least one can say is that it reveals the poet's injustice towards me". - PONGE (Francis). LAS to writer Konrad Bieber and his wife. May 10, 1970. 2 pp. in-8. Letter of thanks for their welcome to their new home in Port-Jefferson, USA: "Please also tell all those who attended the dinner reading and reception at your home what a pleasure it was to meet and talk with them". = - GUITTON (Jean). Ms of 6 ff. in-folio, with sealed env. 1976. Working manuscript, only 3 ff. crossed out. Guitton paints a fabulous portrait of the philosopher Émile Boutroux ("In 1870 Boutroux must have been 20 years old. (...) He looked like a wise man capable of absorbing, levelling, assimilating and putting everything in its place"), then evokes Henri Poincaré, questions the choice between literature and science ("Literature is the ideal. Science is the real"), and continues with philosophy and his life. His autobiography, Un siècle une vie, was published in 1988 (Robert Laffont). Expert: Ségolène Beauchamp
