Les Epistres d'Ovide nouvellement mises en vers Françoys. [...] Plus y a la response à icelles epistres. Lyon, [Philibert Rollet pour] Eustace Barricat, 1552. 2 parts in one volume, in-16, supple vellum overlay, gilt fillet, small fleuron in center, smooth spine decorated, gilt edges (period binding). First edition of this translation by the poet Charles Fontaine (1515-1589), a disciple and defender of Clément Marot, who spent part of his life in Lyon, where he became close to Barthélemy Aneau. It was shared between Jean Temporal and Eustache Barricat, a Lyon merchant-librarian whose publishing activity is known only from a dozen editions published between 1550 and 1556. Barricat's typographical mark on the title (Silvestre, n°543). The Response aux dix epistres precedentes, by Michel d'Amboise, is paginated separately. A charming copy in contemporary gilt vellum. Ink scratch on title. Angular staining throughout. Baudrier, IV, p. 2. - Diane Barbier-Mueller, Inventaire..., n°348.
