Adriaen van Ostade is regarded as the "creator of the Dutch peasant painting" (Bernhard Schnackenburg). Although he studied under Frans Hals, the influence of this master on his art is rather indirect. The small-figure interior painting, which Ostade brought to its highest flowering, was foreign to Hals. The influence on his pupil therefore lies less in the style itself than in his attitude and approach to painting. The same applies to Rembrandt's often-described influence on Ostade, which primarily relates to his color palette. Our painting is not one of those atmospheric interiors like the majority of Ostade's peasant paintings, but an outdoor scene. However, here too, figures and space are merged into a unity through color and light in a wonderful way that is typical of Ostade. At the center of the scene in front of a village inn is the back figure of a dancing peasant in a red shirt and high hat. A study from the Städel collection in Frankfurt (B. Schnackenburg: Adriaen van Ostade. Isaak van Ostade. Zeichnungen und Aquarelle, 1981, vol. I, p. 104, no. 119. illus. vol. II, p. 62).
