Flemish master of the 16th century St. Hubert, patron saint of hunters Oil on wood. 42,5 x 35. Provenance Italian private collection. This depiction of St. Hubert praying in front of a forest landscape was prepared through intensive study of nature. The lush, partly shaded, partly brightly lit foliage is depicted in a finely toned painting style. The contrast between Hubert's concentrated adoration of the crucifix placed between the stag's horns and the commotion around him - the hunting companion with his horse running into the left of the picture and the dog running in the direction of the viewer - heightens the tension in the picture. As the stickers on the reverse prove, the wooden panel was exhibited at one of the eight fairs of the Florentine Biennale d'Antiquariato held at Palazzo Strozzi between 1959 and 1975. Verso: Two labels at the top right; the upper rectangular one in blue, with remnants of a stamp in red, inscription and handwritten numbering "Mostra Nazionale Antiquaria / Città di Firenze Palazzo Strozzi / 103". Below a round stamp in brown with the same inscription and numbering.
