Alexei Petrovich BOGOLIUBOV (1824-1896) [attributed to]
Pont des Arts seen from the Pont du Carrousel, circa 1885-1890
Oil on canvas.
Unsigned.
"A Bogoliuboff" inscribed in point on the stretcher top right.
48 x 64 cm
This painting should be compared with an oil on paper by Bogoliubov dated 1889 with the same subject and composition, offered at Sotheby's on June 7, 2010. The work was of a smaller format and featured a few differences from the present painting (barges, Louvre buildings, the dome of the Institut...). In the same spirit, he painted the Eiffel Tower (which, like the Pont des Arts, is a metal structure) in 1889, also with the Seine in the foreground at dusk (Musée Carnavalet). The Musée Carnavalet also has a very similar painting by Stanislas Lépine (1835-1892): le pont des Arts vu du pont Royal (circa 1884).
