PARNASSE SATYRIQUE (Le) du sieur Théophile. S.l., 1660, small in-12, lemon morocco, triple gilt fillet, ornate spine, olive-green morocco lining, interior lace, double marbled paper endpapers, gilt edges (Thibaron-Joly).
Sought-after edition of this famous collection of licentious and satirical poems, a landmark work of 17th-century libertinism.
It is the prettiest of this work and is an addition to the Elzévirienne collection (Lachèvre, Recueils collectifs..., p. 71. - Willems, n°1705).
Denounced by Father Garasse as the most horrible book that the most pagan and despotic centuries ever produced, the work led to Théophile de Viau's arrest as soon as it was published in 1622: initially condemned in absentia to be burned alive, the poet was finally forced to endure two years' imprisonment, before being banished from the kingdom for life.
A very fine copy in doubled morocco.
From the libraries of Bruno Monnier, at Château de Mantry in the Jura, and Antoine Mouradian.
