Gilded copper frame decorated on the lid with a country scene animated by characters. On the back, a game scene. On the front, an arrival of fishermen. On the sides, angling and a cooper's boat.
Accompanied by a pen-and-ink bill with seal.
Provenance:
"I declare .... that the snuffbox depicting boats was purchased by my grandfather F. de Palesieux, a senior officer in the service of France under Louis XV. This snuffbox belonged to Voltaire and has been preserved to this day in my family as a precious souvenir. Paris 1860. Under the seal of my friends and my signature. A.M. de Palesieux de Frariere."
