The Val d'Orbey, near Colmar in Alsace, was part of the Ribeaupierre seigneury, owned for almost a century by the Dukes of Deux-Ponts, ancestors of the Kings of Bavaria. At the time of publication, the author of the present work was an advisor to the Imperial Court of Colmar.
