Important astronomical pocket watch/coach clock, Pierre Caillatte Heidelberg, ca. 1640/1700
Ca. Ø63.5mm, ca. 197g, plain silver case, fire-gilt movement, verge escapement, signed beneath the decorations, extremely rare and magnificent dial with early triple calendar, moon phase and decentralised time display, single-handed, intact and in very beautiful condition. This exceptionally large astronomical pocket watch was made by Pierre Caillatte from Heidelberg. The watchmaking family first worked in Geneva in the 17th century, later also in Copenhagen. Around 1700, this watch was modernised, see movement decoration, conversion from gut string to chain and fitting with a hairspring. The optical condition of this rarity is fantastic, the large size exceptionally rare. Provenance: Sotheby's New York 1976.
