Albert RAFOLS CASAMADA (1923-2009) Illa grisa, 1995 Pencil on paper, signed and dated lower right Height 50 cm; Width: 71 cm (per sheet) Provenance : - Galerie Clivages, June 1996 Born into a family of Catalan painters, Albert Ràfols-Casamada learned drawing from his father. He abandoned his training as an architect to learn painting, and the poems he wrote took on new meaning under his brush. He studied in Paris, and traveled to Holland and Belgium. His work, initially figurative, soon moved towards abstraction, influenced by the works of Nicolas de Staël and Joan Miró. He poetically depicts subjects such as the sea and antiquity, enlivened by vivid colors. Some of his works are held in museums such as the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, and the Guggenheim Museum, New York.
