Guide-rope, Arago, 1906
Positive on glass, 115x160 mm, in a period wooden frame, typed caption on paper : «Bèze, Cote d’Or, à bord du Arago, 5 septembre 1906 à 6h55, 1025 m - Trace du guide-rope». Le ou la (the) guiderope: borrowed from the English guide-rope, composed of guide and rope. The guiderope is a long rope, about a hundred metres long, that the aeronaut lets hang from his basket and drag over the ground as he approaches the earth to brake his aerostat and stabilise its altitude.
