Le ou la (the) guiderope: borrowed from the English guide-rope, composed of guide and rope. The guiderope is a long rope, about a hundred metres long, that the aeronaut lets hang from his basket and drag over the ground as he approaches the earth to brake his aerostat and stabilise its altitude.
