Born in Cairo, Egypt, Hassan Soliman was a painter, writer and illustrator. He graduated from the Cairo School of Fine Arts in 1951. The following year, Soliman moved to Luxor in Upper Egypt, where he worked as painter-in-residence at the Atelier de Louxor until 1953. The artist then moved to Italy to study at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan, where he graduated in 1966. During this period, he toured Europe visiting museums and art galleries. On his return to Egypt, he taught at the Egyptian Open University and the Film Institute. He worked as an editor and art critic for the monthly cultural magazine al-Majjala. Esteemed in Egyptian artistic circles, he was nevertheless an introvert who loved solitude. He was particularly inspired by the dramatic themes of Leonardo da Vinci, the romanticism of Goya and the artistic genius of Picasso, who was deeply influenced by Guernica.
