A fine copy of this collection from Galerie contemporaine, a weekly magazine published from 1876 to 1885. It offers a magnificent account of 19th-century French cultural life, featuring 133 figures from the literary, arts and science worlds of the time, distributed over 8 volumes. Each volume includes 25 hors-texte photographs mounted on tabs and on strong paper, with photographic reproductions of works of art and portraits of our most famous figures. The book includes 66 photographs of the characters described in the gallery. The biographies are also accompanied by several illustrated elements: sketches, reproductions of manuscripts, engravings and lithographs.
Among the figures featured are Baudelaire, Rossini, Clemenceau, Alphonse Daudet and many others photographed by Carjat; portraits of Gustave Doré, Edmond de Goncourt, Ferdinand de Lesseps, Baron Taylor, Georges Sand, Gounod, Louis Figuier and others by Nadar.
