French school circa 1820 workshop of Baron François Gérard (French, 1770-1837) Portrait of His Royal Highness Charles-Ferdinand d'Artois, Duc de Berry, three-quarter view, in full regalia Paper mounted on canvas. Height 87 Width 69 cm. (old restorations) Provenance: large château in Blésois, collection of the Marquise de X. French School, ca. 1820. A portrait of H.R.H. Charles-Ferdinand d'Artois, Duke of Berry, by the studio of Baron François Gérard François. Paper mounted on canvas. Our painting is a partial repeat of the composition by Baron Gérard, commissioned by Louis XVIII, featuring the full-length portrait of Charles-Ferdinand d'Artois, Duke of Berry, son of Charles X (canvas, 1820, 241 x 160cm, Paris, Musée du Louvre, inv. 4769). Berry, son of France, is depicted in this painting in wedding attire: in 1816, he married Princess Caroline de Bourbon-Siciles (1799-1870), eldest daughter of François I of the Two Sicilies and Marie-Clémentine of Austria, in Notre-Dame Cathedral, Paris. Four children were born of this union, including Henri, the "miracle child", Duke of Bordeaux, then Count of Chambord.
