Barye, Antoine-Louis. Lion qui marche. Bronze, dark patina, screwed to a rectangular bronze plinth. Signed on the plinth and with the foundry signet of "F. Barbedienne Fondeur". Modeled around 1840, cast after 1876, dimensions: 23 x 40 x 10 cm.
The bronze sculptor Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810-1892) acquired a model of the "Striding Lion" probably in February 1876 at the Hotel Drouot in Paris, where the "Vente Barye" took place after the death of the famous sculptor Antoine-Louis Barye (1795-1875), at which Barbedienne purchased many of the artist's models. - The patina here particularly beautiful and without the frequent green tinge. - Patina slightly rubbed in places, with a tiny nick on the spine and somewhat dusty in places.
