In the early 2000s, Thomas Ruff stumbled across a propaganda book about Mao Zedong and became interested in the visual rhetoric of Chinese Communism, eventually purchasing copies of "La Chine - l'itération française", a periodical produced by the Chinese Communist Party from the late 1950s to the 1970s. In this series, Thomas Ruff reworks these images from "La Chine", depicting cheerful soldiers, panoramic views, ceremonies and Mao himself, digitizing and converting them into pixels. The result is an ingenious photographic analysis of Chinese propaganda.
