Note: Benjamin Roubaud was a student at the Beaux-Arts in Marseille, before becoming a pupil of Louis Hersent in Paris. He was a painter, caricaturist and illustrator. He began his career in magazines such as Charivari, where he quickly made a name for himself with his humorous drawings, critical of French life and the politics of the day. He was particularly inspired by Algeria, where he spent several years. He worked particularly for L'Illustration. Drawings from this period were published in numerous works in the 1840s, including La galerie royale des costumes, Les troupiers d'Afrique and Album d'Afrique.
