Eugène DELACROIX (Charenton Saint Maurice 1798 - Paris 1863)
Sheet of studies of various figures in
medieval costumes
Pen and brown ink.
22 x 17.5 cm
Bears the studio stamp (Lugt n°838a) in the lower center.
Our drawing is probably based on one of the collections of engravings by Hans Burgkmair (Augsburg 1473-1531). The Louvre owns several sheets from the same series. Delacroix is said to have made partial use of the collection of engravings belonging to Abbé Marolles, assembled in a dummy collection under the title Vieux maîtres en bois, kept at the Bibliothèque Nationale.
Claudine Ganeval has written an article on these drawings.
