Rare ICON of the Great Martyr Saint Pantaleon (Panteleimon) of Nicomedia. Tempera on wood, in its important 84 zolotniks (875 ‰) vermeil basma with repoussé decoration of a semiset of scales and medallions enclosing plants in the Art Nouveau style, the lower edge engraved with the Cyrillic inscription From the design by architect Vladimir Pokrovsky 1909. The sides engraved with prayers in Old Russian and the back sheathed in red velvet. Slight wear to the paint on the saint's legs due to the heat of a candle. Moscow, 1908-1917 (circa 1909). H. 45 L. 36.5 cm Gross weight 3580 g HISTORY: Vladimir Alexandrovitch Pokrovsky (1871-1931) was a famous architect and architectural historian recognized as one of the leading figures of the Neo-Russian style. The Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Parkhomovka, in the province of Kiev, remains an iconic building, as does St. Sophia's Cathedral in Tsarskoye Selo, and the Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul in the Schlisselburg gunpowder works (1903-1907), which could not be preserved.
