Africa Middlebrook et al, John E. Album with 17 original photographs and 3 collotypes. Circa 1890-1900. Vintages, mainly albumen. Each approx. 14 x 19 cm. 4°. Mounted in hldr. album of the period with gilt fillets on covers and spine (spine renewed, somewhat rubbed and bumped). Mostly titled in the print, partly also monogrammed (J.E.M., 7 prints in total) and with inventory number. - John E. Middlebrook was a photographer based in South Africa. He opened his photographic studio in Kimberley, the Premier Studio, in the early 1870s and maintained a second studio in Durban. Among the labeled images are the following titles: Skeleton of a hut showing its architecture. Zulu Police Durban. Women drinking Kafir Beer. Dinzulu (Cetwayo's (sic) son and heir). Zulus making fire by fiction. Zulus fighting for possession of a skin. Evading his mother-in-law, a Zulu custom. Inhambaan dance. Zulus smoking Insango (with doublette). Zulus at their midday meal eating porridge. - Contains three photographs in collotype by W. Schultz with pictures from Dar es Salaam, typographically inscribed and dated 1897 in the print: Einfahrt eines Deutschen Dampfers (cf. Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, RP-F-F00999-DC). Beach picture. Waniamvesi village. - Partly stained and rubbed. One print with losses, three others with some image loss due to bursting and rubbing.
