Gropius, Walter Two typewritten letters, one with handwritten signature. August 18 and 21, 1957. ca. 28 x 22 cm. A total of three folded sheets. Gropius comments on a journalistic review in the Berlin daily newspaper "Die Welt" of a house he designed in the Bauhaus style. Gropius had designed the "Walter-Gropius-Haus", a 9-storey residential complex, in 1957 on the occasion of the first building exhibition "Interbau". The building was largely criticized by experts and in the press as conservative, especially in comparison with more modern designs by Le Corbusier, Broek/Bakema and others. Contains a typewritten letter to Lisbeth Kroll, the wife of the pianist and music critic Erwin Kroll, dated 18 August 1957 with handwritten signature and printed letterhead. She had previously informed Gropius by letter about the critical reception of his building, for which he expresses his thanks here. In the second letter, a two-sheet carbon copy of a letter dated August 21, 1957, Gropius replies to the journalist Joachim Besser with express permission to publish the letter. Gropius expertly and objectively refutes the criticism. - Enclosed original envelope from the letter to Kroll, with major defects. The letter somewhat browned in the margins. In good condition.
