He began his literary career in 1844 with the publication of a volume of poetry. He then turned to finance and archaeology. He achieved great success with his short story Fanny (1858). His success was mainly due to the intelligence with which he excused the corrupt manners of a certain section of French society.
Autograph letter signed "Ernest Feydeau" (to the Countess of Loynes), Paris, November 5, 1872, I p. by -8°. Beautiful piece, eager letter. He says he gets down on both knees on the ground to ask the dear and beautiful Madame when she can receive him to talk to him... about my big affair.
