Having to earn his living at a very young age, he became a notary's clerk. He completed his education by enthusiastically reading Shakespeare, Schiller and Walter Scott. In 1924, he had a natural son (Dumas fils). He began to publish, and with Henri III he achieved fame. In 1847, he had the historic theatre built at great expense, but had to stop performances for budgetary reasons in 1851. He went into exile in Belgium to escape his creditors. An admirer of Garibaldi, he followed him on the expedition to Les Milles. On his return to Paris, he spent the rest of his life looking after his son.
